Ravello – Lab in the Clouds (part 1 – SignUp)

Considering virtualizing your environment into the cloud?

Join me as I document my journey exploring this unique offering. Together we walk through the various processes of working with-in the Ravello system, from getting started to building your own application.

About Ravello

Let me tell you about Ravello Systems, an Oracle company, is the industry’s first Cloud Application Hypervisor provider. Using Ravello, enterprises can encapsulate their multi-VM applications and run them anywhere – on-premise or in any cloud – without making any changes whatsoever, and thereby implement a true hybrid cloud.

Since their beta in February 2013, over 1 million plus CPU hours have been used across 30,000 applications deployed by more than 2,000 users/groups.

They offer a 30-day unlimited use trial to get you started. I highly recommend that you have your environment ready to go before you click the ‘OK’ button because that time goes by really fast.
In this post I am going to show you how to get started with the Ravello system.

Getting Started

While you’re waiting for your response and login credentials there are some details about how the system works and what you can expect for costs as you build your labs and start taking advantage of your new cloud computing resources.

Billing

Ravello Systems billing is based on the Pay to Play Model: Costs (per/hour) are generated based off of the use of Compute, Network and Storage . The cost for each user is going to be determined in how you utilize and configure your environment.

You can chose between to models for Compute
  • Cost Optimized
    • Ravello auto-picks the underlying cloud infrastructure for lower prices
  • Performance Optimized
    • Choose among worldwide cloud regions to get the highest performance available
      • Regions like: Europe West, US East, US Central, US West, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Sydney, Taiwan and Tokyo

Here are screen shots of the price/hr for Compute, Storage and Network

Below is an example lab I created to test the price structure, as you can see the cost is going to vary when you want/need a lot of compute and storage resources.
